OUTSTANDING SCIENCE TRADE BOOK FOR CHILDREN FOR 1995 Selected by the National Science Teachers Association Children's Book Councilas as the "Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children for 1995."
SECTION I: (INCLUDES A LESSON PLAN BOOK): ("Dawn" teacher guides by the Malnors are superior resources. They are very well-organized and easy to follow. There are enough activities suggested to be very selective and still have more than enough material.)
SECTION I (cont.): Although most activities do not require access to a seashore, people near an aquarium or seashore will learn how to benefit from such a visit. An alphabetical introduction to various forms of ocean life, as seen through the eyes of an illustrated seahorse.
For each letter, a creature is spotlighted and framed by a colorful border featuring other organisms whose names begin with the same letter. Especially lively is the one for "D"-active dolphins leap and swim above and within a multi-shaded ocean across two pages, reminiscent of a Grecian frieze. The "phosphorescent flashlight fish" combines a clever usage of the "ph" and "f" sound, and shows the purple fish glowing green and yellow against a dark background of deep ocean. The double-page view of "rippling rays round a reef" has them radiating out from the center of the spread in a dramatic point of view. All of the flowing, fluid pictures are full of action and detail.
SECTION II: With stunning, full-color illustrations of sea creatures, and an informative, rhyming text, this series leads young ones on a search for a giant red sea dragon, a huge crab, and several exotic fish as the student explores the secrets of camouflage in the ocean depths. Describes, using rhyming text, how various sea animals change color to blend in with their surroundings
SECTION III: Close-up photographs of sand allow readers to see every raspy grain, and cut-paper collages splash across the sandy, shell-strewn background to form incoming surf or dune plants such as periwinkle and hibiscus. As readers walk along the shore with the author, we find beach glass, flotsam, a little jetsam, pelican feathers, black skate egg pouches, and other shore-side marvels. A little girl asks the ocean to show her treasures like these, but her mother asks for things that are too big to carry home--water, the sun, the moon, the sound of waves. A glossary in the back provides more information on shells, finding messages in bottles, and egg pouches, and plants and trees, in addition to things too big to carry home. If you've ever wanted to introduce the ocean to a child who's never seen it, this book captures the dreamy sights, smells, sounds, and textures.
SECTION IV: Students learn basic facts about a wide variety of marine life as they follow this singsong text, set to the tune of "Over in the Meadow." Clown fish, hermit crabs, tiger sharks, jellyfish, manatees, and sea turtles are just some of the ocean-dwelling creatures that readers meet along the way. While most of the rhymes are catchy, a few are awkward, such as "Somewhere in the ocean where the sea grass grows so even/lived a father sea horse and his wee babies seven-." The vibrantly colored, lively art is sure to hold children's attention. As extra assurance, the numerals are hidden throughout the illustrations. A glossary gives brief information on the plants and marine animals mentioned in the rhymes.
