JUNIOR OCEANOGRAPHER:
(GRADES 3-5)
This is a Certificate Course.
The student will be awarded an Oceanography 'certificate of program completion' after obtaining a grade of 80% or higher.


SECTION I: A four part series that prepares the student for a career in Oceanography. Activities, projects, and experiments help children realize how critical the oceans are to our planet. Although most activities do not require access to a seashore, people near an aquarium or seashore will learn how to benefit from such a visit.  This series presents information about the oceans of the world, the life they support, their importance as an ecosystem, and the threats they face. Includes related activities.

SECTION 2: A potpourri of science, crafts, trivia, experiments, games, short biographies of oceanologists, and watery folklore and legends. Chapters are organized around smaller ocean communities and biomes, from the beach, the tide pool, and the ocean meadow to the deepest undersea worlds and the icy realms of our farthest north and south poles. This series looks at waves and wave motion, addresses the mystery of tides and reading a tide chart, describes how salt gets into the ocean, and narrates a Norwegian pourquoi tale. Full chapters are devoted to two of the ocean's more popular denizens, sharks and whales. The illustrated crafts include making a sandpaper shark, a pufferfish pinata, and a polar-bear carving. The series also offers enlightening topics on sea turtles, from their relative size and weight to their endangered status, and adds a brief profile of sea turtle conservationist extraordinaire, Archie Carr. It's a delightful look into the ocean from myriad viewpoints and children will enjoy the multifaceted sensibility. An excellent habitat-studies unit and an excellent resource for factoids.

SECTION 3:  An investigation into general oceanic principles, waves and currents, shorelines and tide pools, the ocean floor, marine life, and ocean conservation. This series is divided into mini-lessons that feature a variety of activities. Covering concepts that range from the water cycle and seawater salinity to discovering how a penguin's coloring protects it and baleen catches krill. The experiments are easily re-created using readily available materials. This section crosses disciplines to include ecology, math, biology, social studies, and art. Also features experiments and activities.

SECTION 4:  Provides information about various aspects of the world's oceans--waves, tides, the food chain, marine creatures, coastlines, and more. It is question-and-answer format. The questions, grouped according to subject, ask what kids want to know, both for personal interest and for reports--for example, "Do any deep-sea fish make their own light?" The text also answers questions about the movement of water, animal and plant life, tides, coral reefs, and more. Handsomely illustrated with paintings

SECTION 5:  The all about whales series discusses "The Life of a Whale," "Toothed Whales," and "Baleen Whales." It tells about insects, their life cycles, and interesting facts and trivia about common species. Provides answers to questions about various species of whales and dolphins as "Do all whales have teeth?", "How long do most whales live?", "Why do dolphins whistle?," and "Can dolphins save humans?"
